Felix Pozojevic is a graduate of the Greenhouse Technician program. They worked with the Horticultural and Environmental Sciences Innovation Centre as a Research Assistant from 2020 to 2021. They now work as the Field Manager at Fertile Grounds Farm.

What led you to want to go to Niagara College in the first place?

I chose Niagara College (NC) specifically for the Greenhouse Technician program. Previously, I had been working in greenhouses as a labourer and wanted to take my career and knowledge to the next level. NC was close to home and the opportunity for hands-on learning felt invaluable.

When did you work with Research and Innovation? Years and what was your role?

I worked with Research and Innovation from 2020-2021 and my role was as a Research Assistant. I primarily worked on developing, managing, and later presenting on different growing/ irrigation structures that an industry partner had been developing

Describe where you’re at now in your life/career. What are you up to?

I am currently in my sixth season of organic vegetable farming. I am the Field Manager at Fertile Grounds Farm in St. Agatha, Ont. While I love organic outdoor farming, my passion still lies in greenhouse production. Luckily, in the off season, I still manage different greenhouse productions around southern Ontario, although I am still on the search for my dream greenhouse career.

How has your experience with Research and Innovation helped you prepare for the workforce?

It has always been a dream to continue to work in agricultural research as a grower. Working with Research and Innovation helped me understand what research jobs require and gave me a gentle taste of the industry. It helped build my confidence and get excited for career opportunities while also pushing me to stay organized and self-motivated.

Do you have any special memories during your time as a student at NC?

My favourite memories were hiking around the campus and Bruce Trail. I really enjoyed all my plant identification courses, and working in the greenhouse as a student.

Did you have a mentor who influenced you?

I feel lucky to say that many instructors and greenhouse staff were very encouraging and supportive!

What advice would you give to a current student?

For a greenhouse horticulture student, I would suggest speaking to all of your instructors about their careers and picking their brains about your dreams. I would make and take fantastic notes and download all lectures to keep for years. To this day I still reference past plant science lectures!

Since graduating, what have you learned? Are there specific examples from jobs you’ve done since that you want to share?

Since graduating, I am forever learning about the nature of agriculture in Ontario’s little bubble. I find it continually interesting and surprising where the produce I grow ends up, and at what price. Every day on the job site I am learning about how to grow plants effectively and efficiently. I have chosen this career because you can never know everything, which is exciting! I will continue to learn forever.

As a Farm Manager, I learn specifically how to grow fruits and vegetables for my local community on a large scale. I have had a lot of on-the-job experience handling and maintaining large equipment and my experience in irrigation has made me quite handy in plumbing and electrical work.

What do you do in your personal time?

In my personal time I love crafting, hiking, plant ID, growing interesting plants for my own joy, and involving the community into the farm experience through workshops.

Proudest achievement since graduating?

I have had a few highlights since graduating. Owning and operating my own farm, becoming a Manager in a few wonderful greenhouses and farms, and becoming more confident in my growing abilities stand out to me.

If you could have a billboard message seen by many, what would it say?

Either “Protect farmland” or “Farmers feed cities”.
